Discourse 24 (11.02.1998)

The highest attainment, happiness and felicity in the world for someone is being inspired by a Perfect Man. Hazrat Gaibi has fine words on that subject.

Don’t be a servant to your ego and say you are a sovereign

Be a lover, this is the real sultanate

One should be a lover and be inspired by a Sufi Master. Then one can be a real Man. Because love educates. Love is like heaven (bag al-iram). Those who enter into this heaven attain perfection. They become spiritually  vaccinated.

Man should also be vaccinated with a superior vaccine. Who is superior to Man? Perfect Man. What is the vaccination of Man? The   teachings of a Perfect Man. All the great men of Anatolia attained perfection through love. Love is the starting point of everything.

Muhabbatullah. It means love of God. How do you love God? You love God by loving his friends.

‘To love the friends of God is to love God’

Now listen! The Nutku Sharif of Hazrat Gaibi tells all these. It begins as follows,

O you who wish to see the face of God

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

O you who expect to unit with God

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

God’s love is necessary for the wayfarers on the spiritual path

Serve the friends of God and receive permission to initiate

See God with the eye of certainty

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

What is seen is His light , His face

For this reason  there is no alternative to him

To know this is  the attainment of  perfection

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

A saviour helps those who suffer for  love

So the lovers all expect his inspiration

He is  the one who is nearer  to you than you

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

Love  a friend of God day and night

Then discover  the secret of yourself

He is God himself, don’t think him apart from God

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

The love of Pir is the guide of Path

Without his love  you remain apart

Every love is wordly except  his

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

Whoever sees  Gaibi with  the eyes of God

Feels the ecstasy of God’s love   in his heart

He leaves his knowledge and journeys back to God

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

The Great Man, Hazrat Gaibi Sunullah(k.s.) says so much with these words. We’ll interpret his words to help the young generation understand better.

O you who wish to see the face of God

God’s beauty is seen in all things. Wherever you look you see the beauty of him. In his book entitled ‘ Marifatname (book of Gnosis)’, Hazrat Ibrahim Hakki says, ‘ There is beauty in everything’. There is nothing, which doesn’t have a share of God’s beauty. Is there anything, which the beauty is absent in the world? Take a snake as an example. It looks frightening but it has a beautiful skin.

O you who expect to unit with God

O you whose consolation is uniting with God for all eternity! There isn’t any other thing that comforts one. Here ‘comfort ’ refers to attaining happiness and peace and the way of it is expressed in the line below it.

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

What does the face of Pir refer to? It refers to the light of Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh). All the Sufi Saints, Sufi Masters and Perfect Men followed his way to attain perfection and adopted his adab (courtesy). Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) was the one who saw the face of God.

God’s love is necessary for the wayfarers on the spiritual path

The wayfarers of Sufi Path need the love of God. The true love is the love of God. There is no other way to God. You can not attain anywhere without love.

Serve the friends of God and receive permission to initiate

Serve Sufi Saints, the friends of God, Perfect Men sincerely and as a result   receive permission to initiate.

See God with the eye of certainty

Look at the Perfect Man with wise eyes and see the light of God in him. The light, the beauty and the perfection that you see in him are in fact your own beauty and perfection. He is a mirror in which you see yourself. A disciple asks to a Sufi Master,

‘My master, how are you?’

He replies, ‘I am as you see me.’

He says, ‘You are so beautiful and perfect.’

These beauty and perfection are in you and you see them in my mirror. For this reason I congratulate you.

What is seen is His light, His face

Whatever you see- from the wings of a fly to a Man- is the light of God. There is beauty even in desert. What is seen in Man and in the universe is the light of God, the beauty of God. There is no other beauty than his. This beauty is separated into pieces and diffused into everything. This is the proof of divine justice. Everything has the beauty of God. Every beauty is his beauty. Every beauty is from him. God says,

‘God loved them and they loved God’

Things possess the beauty of God. The beauty in things is his beauty. His essence is characterized by beauty. There are two types of beauty: detailed (=tafsili) beauty and complete (=icmali) beauty.

The beauty of God is completely seen in Perfect Man. This is not only the physical beauty but also moral beauty and the beauty of soul and thoughts. All sorts of inner beauty such as; generosity, fidelity, knowledge, modesty, courtesy, hospitality, loyalty, sincerity, etc. belong to God. But they all appear in Perfect Men. The beauties of God reveal through them.

For this reason there is no alternative to him

The beauty of God is absolutely unique and has no equivalent.

There is no other beauty than his beauty that we can compare. Beauty is unique and it belongs to God. In the Holy Qur’an God says,

‘Nothing like a likeness of Him; and He is the Hearing, the Seeing’(The Counsel, Verse11)

We may claim that we also hear and see but he sees what we see and hears what we hear because God is the One that sees and hears all things. God sees the whole. We only see the small part of it.  Man is gifted with free will and choice. Thus Man is kindly treated.

‘And surely We have honored the children of Adam’(The Children of Israel, Verse 70)

These favours, gifts are limitless. They may be big or small. In fact all are big and special. The biggest favour is one’s having the ability to think deeply and in great detail (=tafakkur) and great awareness (=idraq). God addresses Man. There is nothing more to say.

To know this is  the attainment of  perfection

That is all about perfection. For this reason it is too difficult to know Perfect Man. Why is it so difficult? Because he is in the human form as well. He is also made of flesh and bone. He eats and drinks like everyone.

Prophets and Saints are ‘ Talking Qur’an ’. Let’s remember the words of Hazrat Mawlana on that subject,

Ibrahim, the son of Azar, built the Kaaba

God built my heart, which is his dwelling place

The Kaaba was built by Ibrahim, the son of Azar. However my heart, which is God’s dwelling place, was built by God Himself. Finally our Great God says,

Whoever wants to talk to God

Should talk to Saints

Saints are speaking Qur’an. For this reason they have all sorts of perfection. So what makes you attain perfection is; ‘Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely’. Love your Pir. To love him is to love God. God’s love manifested itself through him. Because God loved him.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) passed away fourteen centuries ago. However Sufi Saints who are his heirs will continue to exist till Judgment Day. To love Saints is to love Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and to love him is to love God.

Love  a friend of God day and night

Love a friend of God constantly. Your love for him will uplift your soul. It will let you be a friend to yourself. It will let you meet yourself, your Inner Being. Yunus says,

There is an I deeper in me than I

The physical appearance, which is called ‘ I ’ and the soul, which is called ‘I deeper in me ’ unite in love. They become One. Oneness with God is experienced. For this reason Islam is a religion of tawhid (=The Oneness, Unity of God).

Then discover the secret of yourself

You then learn the whole secret of life, the secret of Man and body. God lets you know and perceive them. This can only happen through love.

He is God himself; don’t think him apart from God

Don’t ask who that Man is.  He is Rab. According to the learned (=ahlu zahir), the word ‘Rab’ refers to one of the ninety-nine names of God, which is Master. Islamic prayer beads consist of ninety-nine beads. Each of them refers to an Asma (=name of God).

‘The All-Compassionate (=Ar Rahman), The All-Merciful (=Ar Rahim), The Absolute Ruler (=Al Malik), The Pure One (=Al Quddus)………’

Thousands of names are hidden in one Name. The Sufi Greats use the title of ‘thousand and one-named God ’. In fact God has more than thousand Names. God has limitless Names. For this reason God is the one who educates Man completely and who lets him attain perfection. ‘Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen’ (=All thanks and praises be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds). How does he educate? He educates through heat, water, sun, earth, wind, etc. shortly through everything but Sufi Saints only educate through love.

‘Education is endless.’

There are many ways to teach. However the hardest education is the education of Man. How can this be done? It can only be done by loving him a lot.

If a novice doesn’t love his master, he can’t become an apprentice, a professional or a master.  First he should love his master.

The best teacher – including primary teacher and  lecturer- is the one who thinks like the students and works according to that. In that case the student learns a lot from him. Because his teacher cares about, loves and understands him. As a result the student loves him as well. The teacher makes great effort to achieve this.

The Sufi Masters do the same. They are tenderhearted people. The prophets and saints were tenderhearted too. Hazrat Mawlana says, ‘ Be gentle like water.’ Water is gentle enough to follow the natural paths of earth but strong enough to fracture rocks on its path.

The best education is the one which is done with mildness. The teacher should make his students love him. How can he make them feel this? Through his appearance? No. Through his positive attitude, kindness, mercy, patience, tolerance, etc. We can add many more.

The expression refers to the  Sufi Masters’ having the title of God which is  Rab (=Master). They teach and guide through this title.

The love of Pir is the guide of Path

Your love to him enlightened and guided you. So the real guide is love. Let’s tell the line of Hazrat Niyazi here.

Love is the guide of Prophets and Saints

The love of God was the guide of all prophets and saints. Hazrat Gaibi says the same thing so they are all in agreement.

Without his love you remain apart

If your heart is not filled with his love, then there is no way to travel the Sufi Path.

Every love is worldly except his

What does he mean in this line? To love the Sufi Master is in fact to love Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh). At the same time it is to love God who is the source of it. So to love Perfect Man is to love God and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Loving Perfect Man means getting rid of worldly pleasures. All sorts of love except their love are worldly.

‘You may love your house but it may burn. You may love money but the thief may steal it. You may love your possessions but you may lose them. You may gamble and lose all your money. But you don’t have such bad experiences with divine love. For this reason all sorts of love except the love of God are worldly.’

Let’s read these four lines again.

The love of Pir is the guide of Path

Without his love you remain apart

Every love is worldly except his

Wish to see the face of Pir sincerely

There is a love which goes directly to God. This love is the way to God. It is Divine love which is the highest stage of spiritual perfection.

There is another sort of love, which is worldly. It is also called figurative love. Let’s give an example.

The love of Majnun to Laila is a figurative love. However the love of Yunus or the love of God’s friends is real love. I would also like to say the following things on this subject.

Consciously or unconsciously, whatever you love leads you to divine love. As it is said in the Hadith,

‘Metaphorical love is a bridge to true love.’

‘Not every raindrop falls on sea. If it falls on land, it evaporates into the air; it becomes part of the cloud and rains again. This continues until it falls into a brook and becomes brook, stream, river and finally sea.’

Take the love of worldly things from my heart

He says, ‘ In reality love of worldly things is also your love but still take it from my heart because it is remote from the real love. Then he says,

Let your love be with me in two worlds

In the Opening (Al-Fatiha), chapter 1 verse 6, Qur’an says, ‘ Keep us on the right path (=Ihtinas sirata’l mustakiym).’ ‘ Surely my Lord is on the right path.’ He lets his servants follow his way. Which servants? Of course the ones who truly believe in him.

Faith has levels as well. The faith of common people (=avam), the wise (=havas) and the enlightened (=ehas).

Here we mean the real faith so called perfect faith. Those who have perfect faith see God in everything and everywhere. On this subject, My Master Hodja Mustafa Effendi (k.s.) says,

Our main aim is to see God in everything

We are Khalwati and we follow our greats

Our way is the way of God and Shabani Wali is our Pir

What way is it? It is the way to God. If someone asks why the name of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is not mentioned, our answer will be as follows, ‘ Because there is no other way or love other than his.’ All the ways go to him.  Likewise all rivers’ flowing to the sea, the way of Mawlana, Yunus or Shabani Wali go to him. By saying Yunus, Mawlana, Hadji Bayram-i Wali or Pir Shabani Wali, we mean Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) and his perfection. Hazrat Mawlana, the Great Man, expresses this through the following lines.

I strictly follow Qur’an as long as I am alive

I am dust on the path of Hazrat Muhammad

He expresses his love, respect and trust to Hazrat Shams Tabrizi as follows,

By putting your long-suffering hand on my heart

I spread out the light of your face to the skies

My sultan, wherever you step in

I rub my face on that holy ground secretly

Think of the greatness of his love. He says, ‘I carried and spread the love in your face to the heavens. I decorated there with your love. I put your long-suffering hand on my heart and spread out the light of your face to the skies. My sultan, wherever you step in, I kiss that holy ground secretly at night. If they see the kohl (=eyeliner) in my eyes and ask where I bought it, I will say it is the dust of the holy ground where a Perfect Man steps in.’

Whoever sees Gaibi with the eyes of God

There are two interpretations of this:  The one is ‘ O Gaibi! ’ and the other is ‘ See Gaibi with the eyes of Certainty.’  In fact it refers to Hazrat Gaibi’s addressing to those who read these lines and who hear these teachings. He says,

‘O my sons! O the wayfarers of God’s way! O the followers of Sufi Path!  O the lovers of God! O the lovers of Prophet Muhammad listen! Look at Hazrat Gaibi! But see him with Certainty’s eye.’

Feels the ecstasy of God’s love   in his heart

Saints and Perfect Men usually talk with their eyes closed. They sometimes open but they are half open. Because the light and spiritual splendor in their eyes cause spiritual ecstasy in the heart of a disciple.

He means rabita (= a strong internal bond, a spiritual connection, a band of Union) What happens if you look with the eyes of God? His look causes ecstasy, spiritual vibration, Divine vibration and fear of God within you. In a hadith Sharif on ecstasy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) says,

‘Spiritual ecstasies, vibrations and burnings in the heart are equivalent to good deeds. They are even better than them.’

Only one vibration is heavier than tons of good deeds (=sevap). Because there is modesty in ecstasy. There is self-annihilation in it. However performing good deeds gradually develops an ego. One may say, ‘ I did this and I acquired merit.’ However ecstasy lets you destroy your self (=ego) and proves the existence of God. It’s God’s favour to his servants. Those who look from outside can’t see it. There is ecstasy in every moment of life.

‘The tears of lovers fall like soft April rain. They even can’t realize them. This spiritual vibration warns all the cells. It awakens them. In other words the disciple experiences ‘Ve’l basubade’l mevt (=Wal ba’thi ba’dal mawt  =in the raising (back to life) after the death).’

Spiritual ecstasy lets the disciple die before death. In the Hadith Prophet Muhammad explains this reality as ‘Die before you die and give account of yourself before you get judged. (=Mutu kalbe ente mutu hasebu kalbe entu hasebu)’.

‘The disciple is the one who dies before he dies. He is the one who gives account of himself before the Day of Judgment. He experiences ‘Ve’l basubade’l mevt  (= in the raising (back to life) after the death)

‘The Sufi path is not the path of existence, it is the path of death’

‘ The disciple is the one who is ready to die. Disciplehood is not the way of existence. Those who are interested in external sciences (=ilm al- zahir) are willing to exist but those who are interested in knowledge of God (=ilm al-ladun) are ready to die.’ The line of another Perfect Man -probably Yunus- is as follows,

If you prefer to die, God never lets you die

The real life is hidden in death. In a Hadith our holy Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (pbuh) says,

People are sleeping, only when they die do they wake up

They experience waking up after death by dying before they die. For this reason the disciple experiences  ‘ Wal ba’thi ba’dal mawt (= in the raising (back to life) after the death) in the world.’

‘The Ashab al-Kahf (= the Sleepers of the Cave) shouldn’t be thought to have lived in a cave in Tarsus. The streets are full of Ashab al-Kahf.’

The real friends of God live like Ashab al-kahf. Ashab al-kahf slept in a cave over 300 years. They slept but not die. God made them sleep. They didn’t eat anything for more than three hundred years. God let them live .God is Al-Qadir (= The All Powerful, The All-Capable)

There are people on the streets who don’t deal with worldly events or spend time on current topics but instead who get rid of worldly things and completely devote themselves to God like Ashab al-Kahf. These are the real disciples. They are the living deaths.

Let’s give another example; Man, which is put into grave, is completely apart from the world, his soul leaves his body and his corpse is put into the grave. Does the death body know what happens on earth? No. I am talking about the real disciples. I am not talking about the ones with long beard; dress in gown manufacturing literature of Sufism.  They are chatterers.  The real disciples and Perfect Men have no mark. Their mark is being markless. They are Ashab Al-Kahf.

They are the real lovers of God who live like ‘Ashab al-Kahf ’ or like corpses who put into grave. They are full of spiritual enthusiasm and no more care about anything in the world. So what do these people do? Don’t they communicate with others? Don’t they buy or sell? Of course they do but they don’t care them. They got rid of the worldly attachments and desires.

Think of two men. One is writing on the board with a piece of chalk. However the other is writing with paint. The first is cleaned with duster but the second is not.’

What do I mean? God’s lovers deal with worldly things but they free themselves of them. They don’t fill their hearts with them.  They are pure in heart. They don’t let their hearts be troubled. Because their hearts are purified from worldly desires. There is love in their hearts but this is not the love of worldly things.  However they also concentrate on worldly matters. They care their work. They obey the rules. They only think to serve people. However dealing with worldly things is like writing on the board with piece of chalk for them.

Let’s finish this subject with the words of  Hazrat Gaibi,

The believer’s heart is clear

So God dwells there

The hearts of the friends of God are pure. They withdraw from worldly affairs. However this doesn’t mean they don’t work, eat or drink or possess anything. This means they get rid of the love of worldly things. They know what to love. For this reason the world is their servant.

The story of Diogenes  and Alexander is a good example of this.

Once, while sunbathing, Diogenes was approached by Alexander the Great. He didn’t raise himself up although he heard the crowd approaching. Lots of people were excited about his coming but he didn’t care.

The crowd warned him to be respectful. They asked, ‘ Don’t you know who is coming?’

Alexander asked,

‘Don’t disturb him.’

He then said,

‘People are bowing to greet and show their respect to me. Don’t you know who Alexander the Great is?’

Unimpressed, Diogenes, in a dismissive tone replied,

‘I know you. I know you quite well.’

Alexander asked,

‘So tell me.  Who am I?

He said,

‘You’re the slave of my slave.’

Who can ask Alexander to step out of his light? Only Diogenes who is a perfect disciple. Don’t think disciplehood is unnecessary. Disciplehood is the job of Adam. Diogenes was a perfect disciple and a Perfect Man. He was brave and carefree. He was the only person who could tell this to Alexander because he was the ruler of three continents. No one had ever spoken to Alexander with such self-assured authority before.

Alexander was not offended by this response. He got off his horse and asked,

‘What do you mean?’

He said,

‘You kill people to gain more land. The world is my slave. You are the slave of my slave. Who will stand up and bow? You or me?’ Alexander accepted this. He became a disciple too.

Alexander adopted a more servile attitude and asked,

‘Do you need any special favor from me? ’

Diogenes only said,

‘Yes, please take your shadow off me.’

Diogenes, Mawlanas, Yunus and hundreds, thousands of others, the lovers and the friends of God will continue for all eternity. Happy are the ones who recognize them and who are inspired by them.

May God help us all to follow Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad(pbuh).

Since our subject is Alexander, I want to tell you a story which I read in an encyclopedia when I was young and liked a lot.

It is the story of a guard soldier of Alexander who hasn’t seen his mother -his only relative- for eight years.  As soon as he learns he will be demobilized, he writes to her.

His letter to his mother is in the beginning of the story.

Dear mum,

I will be demobilized. Our eight-year longing is about to finish. I am very happy. My tears are falling onto the letter because of my happiness. If the letter arrives to you before me, the tears may not be dry and may be you drop tears of happiness while reading my lines. So may be our tears meet on the paper before we meet.

My dear mum, my longing to you will end at last. It is not easy to express my happiness in lines. I am the happiest person in the world at the moment. For a soldier, whose only relative is his mother, being demobilized from the army after 8 years is the happiest thing in the world. And for a mother, receiving his son’s letter is great happiness.

I am such a happy man and you are such a happy mother. I am happy that the eight-year longing will end and I’ll meet and hug you again but there is something, which makes me unhappy.

I will meet you at the end after eight years so you may wonder why I am sad. The reason is;

First of all, I want to say that I had two arms, two legs and twenty fingers when you sent me to the army. I could see and hear as well. You may imagine me so but I am not. The reason why I tell you this is; I don’t want to disappoint you because you will expect to see me as you sent me. Let me tell you how I look.

Mum, I haven’t got two arms, two legs and two eyes at the moment. My remaining arm has no hand. My one leg was cut off above the knee level. I am like that. Imagine me so. Don’t expect to see me as the person you sent to army eight years ago. I tell this to you because I don’t want to surprise you or make you cry. I am so excited to see you again but there is something, which makes me sad. Let me tell this.

I lost my leg at a front. Alexander was the one who poured water into my mouth when I opened my eyes. He bandaged my wound. He caressed me with compassion and comforted me.

I lost my arm at another front. I also lost my eye and other organs at the front. The same sort of things happened. Alexander helped me and comforted me again.

Alexander was like a second mother. He tried to console me. In eight years time I lost some parts of my body but his tender hands, compassionate looks, lovely smile and his words which cured me were excellent.  While I was listening to him, I felt as if you were with me and talking to me.

It is not easy to leave such a great commander. For this reason I am sad.

Mum, you learned everything. His being called Alexander the Great is not unreasonable. One leg, one arm and one eye are also enough for a body. I am still happy. I am telling all these to not to disappoint you.

I am still able to breathe and think. I am glad Alexander was with me in my bad moments and I am excited to see you again.

Happy was the mother who gave birth to Alexander the Great who was a disciple and who conquered three continents. However he couldn’t gain the title of World Commander. This title was given to a Turkish sultan, Hazrat Sultan Mehmet Han, the conqueror of Istanbul.

The highest attainment, happiness and felicity in the world for someone is being inspired by a Perfect Man. Hazrat Gaibi has fine words on that subject.

I will meet you at the end after eight years so you may wonder why I am sad. The reason is;
